Looking for the best wine bar in Orange County? Did you know that we love wine? And wine bars? If not, please see bio, or Instagram, or Facebook…. We have searched far and wide in our OC for that perfect vino watering hole – and we finally found it! We were very diligent! Well friends, welcome to Five Vines Wine Bar: our favorite wine bar in Orange County is located in the quaint Historic District of San Juan Capistrano.
Note to other wine bars: dim those damn lights and cozy up the place! This is one of the cutest and most comfy spots to lounge and sip!
And now we have found an excellent wine bar close to home! We will always sing the praises and support locally run, family owned business. And as far as a small business goes, this one is a gem! It is called Five Vines because the owners of this place are a family of five!
There is a cute picture of the family front and center in the bar! Husband, Randy, hand selects the wine; son, Cole, is their beer expert; and wife, Suzy, creates the tasty bites and is very knowledgable and friendly. According to their website, there is always one of the “vines” at the bar. When we visited one Friday night, Suzy was circulating and taking care of her customers. Although we love our wine, we do not profess to be wine experts. And this is why we love wine bars, and a knowledgeable and friendly staff are so important. It’s like anything, always look to the experts to guide you! Suzy knows her wine and can make spot on recommendations according to your taste.
A short, stumbling block away from the train station (don’t drink and drive friends!) and across the street from a cute little movie theater (we just planned your date night!).
For a day out with kids, Five Vines is also walking distance from Zoomars Petting Zoo, one of my son’s favorite spots. Take the kids to pet the bunnies and guinea pigs, ride the horses, and mine for gems, then head over to enjoy the beautiful outdoor patio with the kiddos. Though we live in north OC, this special little spot is definitely worth the drive or short train ride. Excellent service, great location, solid and varied selection of beer and wine, and delicious small plates.
I cannot think of a more perfect way to end a week or start a weekend, this depends on if you are a glass half full or half empty type of person, than sitting in a sweet little place like Five Vines, sipping on a glass of wine and nibbling on small bites with some friends.
They carry over 60 kinds of wines from boutique wineries all over the world.
They offer many different options, either by the taste, by the glass, by the bottle, or by the flight. I love to start with the flight, especially since I am always curious, and really, I can never commit to one of anything, wine, drink, food – this is why I eat family style and I like flights. On occasion, I like a white, love roses, but I am mainly a dry, red wine gal: I love pinots and cabs and some blends. And that’s it folks, that’s about the extent of my wine language and knowledge. So on that premise, here is a tip for those who enjoy wine but are not experts: flights not only allow you to sample, but then it is easier to get recommendations. I had a flight of three reds.
A description of the wine flight! What a great idea!
I identified my favorite of the three, and Suzy recommended a lovely red blend. I love meeting people that are so passionate about what they do, and especially if it is food and drink.
Five Vines also serves both small and hearty bites, perfectly paired with their drinks. The artisanal cheese board is definitely the stand out, with a good range of cheese choices, served with some jams, fruit, and their very yummy nutty mix (you can also order this nutty mix on the side, sweet and spicy).
This beautiful cheese board is served with crackers and warm bread. I am usually good with just a cheese board and a glass of wine, but if you have heartier appetites with you, there are some bigger bites. We also ordered some satisfying and delicious sliders, the pulled pork and the meatball and some gourmet sausages served with some tangy mustards. Yes, these dishes were very filling, but also very well selected for pairings.
Bonus: on Friday and Saturday nights, come enjoy live music! On this particular Friday night, the very talented Sky Green entertained us with her vocals and guitar of top 40 covers and some originals.
They offer ever changing daily specials and Happy Hour menu from 2-6 pm. See you there!
