NAMM Show 2018 – Music Makers Mecca

NAMM Show 2018 – NAMM aka music makers mecca, is an annual music convention held at the Anaheim Convention Center held every year. This year it was held on January 25-28 and was even bigger than last year. Tons of exhibitors were there, representing products from more than 7,000 brands.

(NAMM = National Association of Music Merchants)

I couldn’t believe it, there were so many instruments, tons of audio equipment and other gear to see and play with! You can enjoy artists as they play on various stages and exhibitor booths and there are conferences you can attend to gain more knowledge about the music industry. Topics include growing your brand, how to make a hit record, licensing your music in the digital age, and many more. You’ll learn about everything available in the market, whether you are a music store owner or musician. This is the place to be for all things music. It’s known as the largest trade-only event for the musical products industry. This event isn’t open to the general public. Only members of NAMM, exhibitors or guests of these people are able to attend. If you are able to go, it’s a lot of fun!

NAMM Show 2018

Here are a few things that we enjoyed at NAMM:

NAMM Show 2018

Marshall Wall of Amps

Marshall Amplification – The coolest wall of amps… now THAT’S a Marshall stack! This English company has been building amps for over 50 years. They are one of the most well known brands in the industry. Their signature sound is the Marshall “crunch” that Pete Townshend and John Entwistle of The Who were searching for in the early 60’s. Because of them and many legendary musicians throughout history, the Marshall stack is a must have for a whole lotta bands. Visit Marshall.com to learn more about them.

NAMM cocktails – FYI the cocktails are small and overpriced. Tip: there’s a bar at the neighboring hotels and even the hotel swimming pool had a nice place to sit and enjoy a cocktail for much cheaper. But you’re paying for convenience. We did buy cocktails inside NAMM and it was nice, but not worth the price.

Universal Audio – They usually have the coolest raffle prize. Some lucky winner received a Universal Audio Apollo Twin recording system! For more info about their gear, visit UAudio.com

NAMM Show 2018

Shure – My favorite microphone brand. Their booth is so much fun. You can put on headphones and mic check so many different ones. You will notice a difference between a lower priced mic and a $1,000.00 mic for sure. They have all kinds of content creation products like a pre amp for your computer (perfect for plugging higher end microphones into your computer), podcasting mics and shotgun mics to mount on your DSLR camera. All awesome gadgets for any YouTuber, blogger or podcaster. Check out Shure.com for more about their audio products.

Fender – Another awesome and well known amp brand. And, they have a line of acoustic and electric guitars and bass guitars. Their booth is not a booth. It’s a giant room filled with walls and walls of guitars on display, including vintage guitars to ooh and awwww at. It’s like a guitar museum. I doubt you are allowed to touch those. But there are plenty of shiny new guitars that you can demo in the little booths with headphones on. So fun! I loved their portable Bluetooth speakers. They have a really sleek design with color options that will make any room look rockin’. They also have Puresonic Bluetooth Wireless earbuds. All their products sound as amazing as they look. Loog – A fun way for kids to learn guitar. The Loog guitar works with an app and that comes with a tuner, video lessons, digital songbook and games to keep it fun. The guitars are adorable and come in so many cute colors. Prices range from  $79.00 – $299.00. For more info visit LoogGuitars.com

Strung – Rock inspired guitar string jewelry and bracelets. Stack the bracelets or wear them individually. There are so many cute designs! There are skulls, roses, lightning bolts, infinity symbols, pineapples, feathers, arrows, a corkscrew, and sooooo many more! I especially love the rock “Band Mom” one. You can check them out at GetStrung.com.

Ludwig Drums – The brand of drummer greats like Alex Van Halen and Ringo Starr, Ludwig always has a gorgeous setup front and center of the percussions section at NAMM. Tip: Bring your earplugs for the percussion section if you want to keep your hearing.

Zildjian – The most popular cymbals maker on the planet, Zildjian is also front and center at NAMM in the percussions section You can’t miss them.

Rozanna’s Violins – Beautifully hand painted violins! Rozanna Weinberger, Founder and Julliard trained violinist, believes that music is a powerful influence on a child’s development. Her designs are sure to inspire violinists of all ages! I love the idea of having a unique instrument adorned with gorgeous art. She has designs with butterflies, roses, panda bears, tie dye, sunflowers, skulls, a mystic owl and the moon to name a few.  Of course, our favorite was her purple violin with butterflies! She offers her art on violas as well. Visit her at RozannasViolins.com

Lanikai and Kohala – Both ukulele brands produce beautiful instruments. Enjoy your island vibes with the sweet sounds of your ukulele. I just love island music. It takes me back to memories of our family vacation at North Shore Oahu. So calm. So peaceful. Take me back there, please!

NAMM 2017

Marissa at the Fender booth at NAMM 2017

NAMM is a fun experience for anyone interested in learning what the music brands are up to. You can sit in on a conference, wander around and sample different instruments and learn about new gear. Our 15-year old daughter has been playing acoustic guitar for almost 5 years now, and got excited about the electric guitar last year at NAMM when she stumbled across a Fender Duo-Sonic HS in Daphne Blue. It was love at first sight! It was nice that Fender provided a little booth with headphones for attendees to check out the guitars. After Marissa decided on her first electric, we went to Jim’s Music Center in Tustin and they took care of us. They have a relationship with all the brands and can order anything you want.
