The Song “Falling Slowly”

I heard the song “Falling Slowly” many times. By many times, I mean hundreds of times. I really love this song. It’s one of those great romantic songs that I never get tired of hearing. It’s no surprise songwriters/singers Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglová took the Oscar for Best Original Song from the film “Once” in 2008.  It’s so beautifully written, from its lyrics that speak to those who have felt the ache of longing for someone… to the gorgeous strings that build, as you’re watching this couple on stage make this undeniable connection. I was hoping they would acknowledge this connection the entire time I was watching… It’s a story of a Dublin songwriter who was just about to give up on his dreams, until a feisty beautiful woman caught him singing. (Don’t worry, I won’t spoil it for you.)

This musical is a must-see, if you’re a fan of modern indie pop music and a good romance. I enjoyed the story and the songs. There aren’t too many musicals without a pit of musicians playing below the stage. The actors are the musicians. It’s perfect for a girls night out, date night or even take your guitarist teenage son or daughter for some inspiration.

“Once” is running September 2 – September 30, 2017 at Segerstrom Stage, South Coast Repertory, Costa Mesa.

Special thanks to my friend Mary Vensel White (author of “The Qualities of Wood”) for getting me out to see this show. What a fun girls night out!
